of individual having vitiligo other members of the family also have vitiligo.
Vitiligo (vit-ill-EYE-go)
is a pigmentation disorder in which the cells in the body that make pigment
in the skin (melanocytes), tissues that line inside the genital and rectal
areas and inside of the mouth and nose (the mucous membranes), and the inner layer of the
eyeball (retina) are destroyed. On account of this white vitaligo patches of skin start
to appear on various
parts of the body. The hair that grows in these vitiligo affected areas usually
turn white. The exact cause for this skin disorder is not currently known. However, there are theories
advocating hormonal connection, genetic disorders, autoimmune link etc. The incidence
by family history is about 20 to 30 percent. Vitiligo treatment with homeopathy
therapy is another alternative which is worth looking into. Vitiligo
Symptoms and Signs: White patches or spots are first noticed by
individual who develop vitiligo on their skin. There is no signs or symptoms of
itching, irritation on the affected skin area and the skin
remains of normal texture.
These white patches are more noticeable in sun-exposed areas, which includes
face, lips, hands, arms, feet and legs. Other common areas where white patches appear are
groin, armpits areas around the eyes, nostrils, navel, mouth and
genitals. There are three patterns in which viteligo generally appears. In focal pattern,
skin whitening is confined to one or at most few body areas. In segmental
vitilgo,
people develop white patches on only one side of their bodies.
Vitiligo affects the skin and causes extreme distress and agony to
the sufferers because of its symptoms of unusual appearance. No discrimination
in regards to sex has been observed, it affects
people of both sexes in equal proportions.
Viteligo can start at any
age, however about fifty percent of people with vitiligo develop this skin
disease before the
age of twenty five.
Vitiligo sufferers experience different degrees of the
disease. No predictions can be made as to whether vitligo will spread
or not. In few
people, vitilgo may be hardly noticeable, while in most individuals it is very obvious.
Dark-skinned people normally notice more contrast between the vitiligo patches and
their skin, while people with light-skin usually do not notice much of a
difference. Vitiligo Treatment:
There
are vitiligo treatments which cannot cure vitiligo but can slow down the progress
of the disease. In some individuals it may bring about full repigmentation.
However if color does gets restored to the white patches it is still at risk of
losing it again at some later stage.
Surgical Vitaligo Treatment:
In surgical vitligo treatment the top layer of the skin is removed and is replaced
with
skin of normal color from other normal skin site. In some instances researchers have used the
patient's own melanocytes grown in tissue culture, in cases with stable
vitiligo good results have been seen.
Some people effectively use cosmetics to conceal and cover viteligo patches,
this improves their appearance which further helps the sufferer to feel better
and have confidence. However a person needs to experiment with several brands
and types of cosmetics to get the one which works best for them in order to
conceal vitilgo patches.
