What is Ringworm?

One may think of worms from the name "Ringworm". However, despite its name it has nothing to do with worms. Ringwrom is not any worm infestation, its an contagious fungus infection caused by mold like fungi called dermatophytes, which affects the scalp, the body (usually the groin), nails and feet. The name probably comes from the symptoms this condition has. Ringwrom is also referred to as Tinea.

Ringworm causing organisms grows and thrive on the dead tissues on the skin and on any formation that grows on the skin, such as nail and hair. Conditions like moisture and heat are most favorable to ringwarms causing fungi, this makes ringwrom symptoms to more commonly appear on skin folds such as those between the toes and in the groin.

Symptoms of Ringworm:

Ringworm forms a rapidly growing, red colored, prominent ring like appearing sore on the affected skin area. However, the center of the ring can be clear. It is observed that the sore itself may contain scales, may be filled with fluid and may ooze. Itching and pain may be experienced in and around the ringworm lesions. Often such sores are is less than 5 centimeters across (about two inches) and may occur as single lesions or in groups.

Some individual may experience following ringwroms symptoms:
  • When scalp or beard is infected, it is characterized by bald patches.
  • If nails get infected with ringworm they tend to become thick and discolored.

Ringwarms of the skin is contagious though mildly. A direct skin to kin contact is required for transmission. However the type of ringworm infection acquired from pets can not be transmitted from human to human, and is only possible from animal to human. After 48 hours of ringworm treatment, ringwroms is not contagious at all.

People living in warm, humid climates, or who have a weakened immune system (as a result of medical conditions such as cancer, diabetes, or acquired immune definition syndrome "AIDS") have a higher risk of contracting ringwarms infection. The risk also increases with any direct contact with live sore on an infected person or animal.

Diagnoses of ringwerm is done by clinical appearance of the ringworm sores, or by having a culture test of the fungus taken from the infected site, or by a microscopic assessment of some part taken from the sore, or by investigating the sore with a ultraviolet lamp.

Treatment of ringworm constitutes treatment with fungus eradicating medicines. Such medicines can be in taken in the form of tablet or liquid, orally (by mouth) or topically applied as a cream directly on the affected area.

Animals can too transmit ringworm infection to the people. Ringwerm causing fungi can be transmitted from physical contact with an infected animal's hair or skin. Animals like dogs, cats, especially kittens and puppies, commonly pass the ringwrom infection. Other animals which can pass ringworm infection include cows, goats, horses and pigs.

Some tips to prevent Ringworm infection:

  • Areas of common use should be kept clean. Such as locker room benches, shower stalls, and floors should regularly be kept clean.
  • Use a bath and floor cleaner that has fungus eliminating properties (fungicidal agent).
  • Avoid any type of physical contact with a ringwroms infected individual or animal.
  • As people can also get ringworm infection from personal items of other people. Therefore don't share any objects like clothing, hairbrushes, towels or any other personal items to avoid contraction.
