What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a recurrent skin disease characterized by distinct, red patches covered with silvery scales. Psorisis is skin disease that is immune mediated. Unlike eczema, this disease is rare in young children, more commonly it develops in young adults. There are different types of psoriasis and each type varies in the level of severity. Psoriasis usually affects the trunk, scalp, knees and elbows.

Most medical researchers have concluded that psoriasis is related to the immune system. There is no definite treatment for psoriasis because a medication that may have worked nicely in one patient may not by beneficial in any type for another.

There are five different types of Psoriosis:

  • Plaque psoriasis which is the most common. It is characterized by red, raised skin. Approximately 80% of people have this type.
  • Inverse psoriasis : Symptoms constitute smooth, dry areas of skin, often in folds or creases, which are red and inflamed but don't have scaling.
  • Guttate psoriasis : Symptoms comprise of small, red, individual drops on the skin.
  • Erythrodermic Psoriosis: Symptoms comprise periodic, widespread, fiery redness of the skin
  • Pustular psoriasis may involve widespread areas of reddened skin particularly on the hands and feet.

The cause of psoriasis is not yet known although it appears to have a genetic link. There isn't any type of blood test available for diagnosing psoriasis. Doctors usually diagnose it by physically examining the affected skin. A small piece of skin of the affected are can be taken and examined under a microscope to see for psorisis.

Some people have such genes which makes them more susceptible to psoriasis, but such genes doesn't necessarily mean development of psoriasis will occur. Some triggers work together which cause an outbreak, this makes it difficult to identify each individual factor.

Possible psoriasis triggers include emotional stress, some types of infection, injury to the skin, sensitivity to certain kind of drugs, seasonal changes and hormonal changes.

In normal people skin cells mature and shed about every 28 days or so. In psoriasis, the skin cells multiply and pile up on the bodies surface faster than normal.  The skin cells come up to the surface of the skin within three to six days. And because the body is unable to shed the skin cells with that much speed, patches (also known as "lesions") form on the surface.

There is no cure for psoriasis but the sufferer can effectively avoid  itching skin, scaling, and red lesions. There are many and varied psoriasis treatments available. Treatments can range from topical application ointments to drugs taken orally (internally). If taken in combination the patient they tend to show more effectiveness.

Psoriasis Treatments include:

  • Traditional treatment with Dead Sea Salts.
  • Homeopathic treatment helps to target the root cause of Psoriosis with no concerning side effects.
  • Proper nutrition, sleep and exercise which will improve the immune system of the body.
  • Herbal treatments: Herbal treatments work by gently cleansing body toxins and helping to optimize liver function.
