What is Ovarain cancer?
There are many types of tumors that can start in the ovaries.
Ovarian cancer occurs when cells grow in an abnormal
manner and produce tumors in both or one of the ovaries. Ovaraian
cancer is cancer that begins in the cells that make up the ovaries. Cancer that
originate at other body site which later spreads to the ovaries
is not considered as ovarian cancer.
There are many types of tumors that can form in the ovaries. Ovarian cysts are

do not develop into cancers. Cysts often go away without any treatment, but a doctor may recommend
their removal, to ensure that they do not
become cancerous.
Ovarian cancer is the fifth most common cancer in
women. As per American Cancer Society
statistics for ovarian cancer more than 25,000 new cases and
16,000 deaths will occur in 2004. There has been no change in the death rate for this disease in
the last 50 years.
About 70% of women with ovarian cancer do not get diagnosed until the
disease reaches advanced in stage This makes it most deadly of all female
reproductive system cancers. Survival rate for
stage I disease is about 90% and for stage II about 70%.

Detection in the early stages improves
the chances of treatment success. Chances of surviving
ovarian cancer are brighter if the cancer is found during the early stages.
But in early stages, ovarian cancer rarely shows up any symptoms that women get notice
of. In many cases ovarian cancer symptoms are
wrongly taken as menopausal ailments or abdominal illnesses. Here are some signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer
to look for:
- Constipation urinary frequency or incontinence and any other unexplained
change in bowel or bladder habits.
- Weight loss or weight gain.
- Pelvic or
abdominal pain or discomfort.
- Gastrointestinal problems such as gas, indigestion or nausea.
- A steady
feeling of fullness.
- Pelvic or
abdominal bloating or swelling.
- Feeling exhausted or
Fatigue.
- Any abnormal or
postmenopausal bleeding.
- Experiencing pain during intercourse.
Why
are there many different treatment therapies for Ovarian Cancer?
Because each individual is genetically dissimilar as is the cancer in them,
different treatment therapies may be given to different individuals for ovarain
cancer. Here are some of the therapies.
Surgery for ovarian cancer can be further categorized:

Initial surgery (done for diagnosis and treatment).

Second look surgery
for women in whom cancer responds to chemotherapy.

Additional de bulking surgery.

Surgery for recurrent ovarian cancer.
At the beginning stage tumors are often not cancerous and the women can
expect to get cured by removing the infected ovary or part of it having the
tumor, surgically. However, the results after the treatment therapies depend
on the type of ovarain cancer and how much severe it has gone up to.
