One may have herpes but it doesn't means that you will have an herpes outbreak or show herpes symptoms. About one in five adults in the United States has genital herpes, and its is estimated that 50% to 80% of the adult population in the United States of America has oral herpes.

When do symptoms appear?

Herpes symptoms show up within days or it may take weeks, months or even years after contracting the herpes virus.

The symptoms may be severe or mild with each outbreak. Some people have a mild first outbreak so they do not notice it. Herpes symptoms may not be obvious or clear.

Most of the herpes virus infected people have very mild symptoms or no symptoms.

What are the signs or symptoms of genital herpes?

Outbreaks in the genitals is called genital herpes. These symptoms may last for a period of up to 3 to 4 weeks, but they may heal within 3 to 12 days. The first outbreak of symptoms of a herpes infection is called "primary herpes. Herpes symptoms may include the following:

Sores, blisters, cuts, pimples, bumps or a rash:

• A person may experience one or cluster of sores, blisters, tiny red bumps, pimples or rashes in the area of outbreak.  Sometimes the skin may just get slightly reddened without visible lesions. Cold sores or fever blisters usually appear on the lips or inside the mouth and are common in young children.

Itching, burning or tingling in the affected area:

• The individual with outbreak in the genitals may feel like itching, burning or tingling in the genital area. Burning feeling is usually sensed if urine flows over the herpes caused sores.

Painful urination:

• Painful urination and a discharge that may be vaginal or penile are possible, but this is not a common symptom. And in some cases inability to urinate can come up if severe swelling of herpes sores block the urethra (urethra is a tube connecting the urinary bladder to the outside of the body. The urethra has the function of passing urine in both sexes).

Aches:

• Aches and pains in and around the infected area is one of the common herpes symptoms and one may also have a general run down feelings.

Flu-like symptoms:

• In some severe episodes people may have the symptoms like headache, fever, chills, swollen glands in lymph nodes near groin, throat, and under the arms.

Some other symptoms:

• One may sense change in urinary frequency, urinary urgency and tingling in the legs. Also tingling, itching, burning, pain or pressure at a previous outbreak site is also a herpes symptom.

In some people symptoms may last several weeks and in some people symptom heal quickly, but this can not be predicted. Symptoms may cause no pain and occur at a spot that is unnoticeable. The symptoms of herpes in later outbreaks are often not that much severe than the first one.

Some herpes symptoms which are mistakenly thought of as herpes outbreaks are:

• Insect bites - Jock itch
• Yeast infections - Ingrown hair follicles
• Abrasions or razor burn - Hemorrhoids

Where do symptoms of genital herpes appear?

When a person has genital herpes, the virus lies dormant (sleeps) in the bundle of nerves at the base of the spine. When the virus reactivates (wakes up), it travels nerve paths to the surface of the skin, sometimes causing an outbreak. The nerves in the genitals, upper thighs and buttocks are connected; therefore, a person can experience outbreaks in any of these areas. Such areas include:

In females

• Vagina - May appear in or around.
• Anus - May appear in or around.
• Groin - The genital area meeting the inner thigh can have herpes.
• Vulva - May appear on the vaginal lips.

In males

• Penis - May appear on the tip of the penis or shaft.
• Scrotum - Growth on the soft balls at the end of penis.
• Anus or around buttocks .
• Groin - The genital area meeting the inner thigh can have wart growths.

Herpes is very much widespread but more than 90% of the herpes infected people don't know that they have herpes until symptoms of herpes appear.
