Fibromyalgia. Fibro myalgia Treatment


What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is disabling condition which shows up as chronic pain illness, stiffness, soft tissue tenderness, general fatigue and sleep disturbances. It is a health condition in which pain has been for at least 3-4 months which comes up on both above and below the waistline, right and left side of the body. The most common location of pain are neck, back, shoulders, pelvic girdle and hands. The pain is steady or occur at intervals. As such symptoms occur on any body part and are not limited to a specific body part.

Fibromyalgia is estimated to be affecting 2-4% of the population. Females are more affected then men. But it can happen to anyone young or old, male or female.

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia
Here are listed the most common symptoms which a fibromyalgia patient may experience:

  • Widespread and chronic Pain with different intensities with no definite location on the body, usually in the morning. Pain can be in the form of muscular aching, stabbing or shooting pain. Other related problems include feeling numbness and tingling.
  • Fluid retention
  • Having extreme fatigue sessions.
  • Have sleep disorders like no deep sleep, feeling restless.
  • Symptoms of irritable bowel and bladder, migraines, lack of concentration, impaired memory, skin rashes, dry eyes and mouth, anxiety, depression, ringing in the ears, dizziness, vision problems.

Diagnoses depends on finding tender points in characteristic locations, patient history, self-reported symptoms, a physical examination and an accurate manual tender point examination. There is no laboratory tests for fibromyalgia diagnoses.

What are the causes of Fibro myalgia

Its not contagious or have a infectious cause. As it doesn't appears to be more in couples in which one has fibromyalgia as in the general public. The definite causes behind fibromyalgia are not yet known but new studies indicate a possibility of genetic factors because it tends to run in families, researchers agree that FM is a disorder of central processing. The sufferer experiences pain amplification due to abnormal sensory processing in the central nervous system.

Fibromyalgia Treatment

Treatment of fibromyalgia importantly includes patient education and change in lifestyle. A good lifestyle alone has shown to bring great amount of improvement in fibromyalgia symptoms. Although there is no cure but the symptoms can be controlled by treatment and following a good lifestyle. Proper nutrition, alternative treatments, relaxation techniques and adequate exercise play a significant role in the treatment of fibro myalgia. Avoid avoiding caffeine, sugar and alcohol intake.

Drugs include medication to improve deep sleep, antidepressants and pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen which help in relieving pain as and when it is experienced. The dosage is started at a low dose and gradually increased or decreased depending upon the response by the patient.

Complementary therapies such as physical therapy, light aerobics, therapeutic massage, water therapy,  acupressure, yoga, acupuncture, breathing techniques, relaxation exercises, aromatherapy, nutritional supplements etc can be very beneficial.

Some circumstances worsen or induce an attack like narcotic pain medications, physical and mental fatigue, cold or humid weather, fried foods, diet low in fats, excessive physical activity and also inactivity.
